Feeding the Homeless Project, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is a non-denominational, faith-based effort to address the plight of homeless men and women on the streets of Atlanta.
Our Purpose is Threefold. We Will:
- Bring attention to this problem in our community; offering community service events for volunteers and organizations to serve the homeless on the streets of Atlanta.
- Support and partner with compatible non-profit organizations to deliver essential services that will improve the quality of life for those who live on the edge of society.
- To go “Beyond Breakfast” to individually connect with our friends on the streets to teach them the skills and connect them to the essential services they need to help them off the street, one at a time when they are ready.
BridgeBuilders and Going Beyond Breakfast
FTHP has expanded its mission to go “Beyond Breakfast” to help connect our friends on the street to essential services they need along the path to improving their lives in meaningful and enduring ways. To help us achieve this goal, we have established a volunteer position called a BridgeBuilder, so named for building bridges between those we serve and third party providers of a variety of services.
FTHP BridgeBuilders receive training and access to resources that can help connect those in need to such things as transitional housing, legal services, physical and mental health care, addiction recovery, education, job training, job placement, childcare and more. FTHP doesn’t provide these services directly, but we partner with and identify other organizations that can help in these areas of need.
The BridgeBuilder role is based on relationship building – being there frequently, getting to know the people we serve, listening to their stories, becoming a friend, establishing trust and eventually understanding what a person needs to move forward and how to help make that move. Going “Beyond Breakfast” is not always finding a place to live or a job. It might just be lending an ear or offering a genuine smile and a hug on Saturday mornings. The majority of those on the street may not be ready or willing to do what’s necessary to escape homelessness. But by connecting with them in genuine and healthy ways our BridgeBuilders can and do go “Beyond Breakfast” to make a real difference in their lives.
